Narendra Singh Negi

नरेंद्र सिंह नेगी

born 1949 · Music · Pauri, Pauri Garhwal

Narendra Singh Negi is Garhwal's greatest living cultural figure: singer, poet and chronicler whose songs have carried the region's joys, migrations and politics for five decades. It is said that to understand Garhwal you can read a hundred books, or listen to Negi.

Born in Pauri in 1949, he began recording in the 1970s with the Garhwali Geetmala cassettes and never stopped. His voice and pen made the modern Garhwali song: love lyrics, jagar-inflected devotionals, songs of the soldier's wife and the migrant's village, all in a language he helped keep alive.

Negi's fame has a political edge his listeners relish. Nauchami Narayana (2006), a sly ballad aimed at a sitting chief minister, was credited with shaking a government, and his songs of the statehood years gave the movement part of its soundtrack. Ghughuti Na Basa, Fyunladiya and dozens more are hill standards.

He received the Padma Shri in 2022, and remains, for Garhwalis at home and in the diaspora, the sound of home. His concerts fill grounds from Dehradun to Delhi, three generations singing along.
