  1. Prehistory
    Ochre rock art near Almora marks the region's earliest human traces.
  2. c. 3rd century BCE
    The Maurya empire's rock edict is carved at Kalsi near Dehradun.
  3. c. 2nd century BCE
    The Kuninda kings strike the hills' first coins.
  4. c. 700
    The first great hill dynasty rules from Kartikeyapura in the Katyur valley.
  5. c. 800-1100
    The great stone temple groups of Kumaon rise under Katyuri patronage.
  6. c. 10th century
    The Chand dynasty establishes itself in Kali Kumaon.
  7. 823 (by tradition)
    Tradition dates Kanak Pal, ancestor of Garhwal's rajas, to this year.
  8. c. 1500
    Fifty-two hill forts are welded into the Garhwal kingdom, capital Srinagar.
  9. 1568
    Balo Kalyan Chand moves Kumaon's capital from Champawat to Almora.
  10. 17th century
    Baz Bahadur Chand's reign marks the Chand kingdom's height.
  11. 1790
    Chand rule ends at the battle near Hawalbag; Almora falls.
  12. 1804
    Pradyumna Shah dies at Khurbura; Gorkha rule covers the hills.
  13. 1815
    The Anglo-Nepalese War ends Gorkha rule. Kumaon and east Garhwal go to the British; Tehri is restored to the Garhwal raja.
  14. 1820s-1841
    The Raj builds its summer refuges in the hills.
  15. 1921
    Badridutt Pandey's Kumaon agitation ends forced labour.
  16. 1930
    Chandra Singh Garhwali refuses to fire at Peshawar; protesters are shot at Tilari in Rawain.
  17. 1944
    The Tehri activist dies after an 84-day hunger strike in jail.
  18. August 1949
    The princely state merges into the Union and becomes a UP district.
  19. 1960s
    Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Pithoragarh are carved out after the 1962 war.
  20. April 1973
    Villagers near Gopeshwar vow to hug their ash trees; the loggers withdraw.
  21. 26 Mar 1974
    Gaura Devi and the village women stand between the axes and the Reni forest.
  22. 1980
    A 15-year ban on commercial felling above 1,000 m in the UP Himalaya.
  23. 1994
    Mass protests sweep the hills; firings at Khatima, Mussoorie and Rampur Tiraha give the movement its martyrs.

    Uttaranchal becomes India's 27th state, carved from Uttar Pradesh.
